EQUAL JUSTICE
Whatever the color of our skin, we deserve a speedy and public trial. We have the right to the assistance of counsel. Both of these rights are guaranteed in the Sixth Amendment of our Constitution. Yet the right-wing extremist politicians that have run our county for so long have forgotten the law applies equally to everyone. People of color receive harsher sentences for the same crime in Tarrant County. It’s time to end that. When you elect me as a judge to the criminal court, I will administer justice equally for all. I’ll show up for work, and get the work done. Because I’ve been involved in every aspect of criminal justice from the uniformed police officer to appellate attorney, I have the experience we need for Tarrant County.
REAL MENTAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS
Everyone, no matter what their mental health, deserves to be treated with fairness and empathy. Those of us who are experiencing a mental health crisis, do not deserve abuse at the hands of the justice system. Yet in Tarrant County, that is exactly what is happening. For too long, our county government has ignored this very real crisis in our county. One man (and possibly more) have been pepper sprayed to death by jailers. Numerous people have died of thirst. Many of these low level, non violent offenders should not be in jail at all. Countless people are denied their medications. Many of the jail deaths are a result of medical neglect.
We can change that kind of cruel and unlawful action. I was the Chief of the Mental Health Division in the Dallas District Attorney’s office. I know how to solve this problem. I will not leave mentally ill defendants languishing for five months without a court hearing or an appointed attorney. I will create a mental health court so these cases are heard rapidly and fairly. I will make sure people who don’t deserve to be put in jail receive the appropriate treatment.
Elect me as your judge and I’ll make the law work for all of us.

OUR STORY
The mother of a severely mentally ill client called and requested he be transported to the hospital. Instead, he was arrested. After being held in jail for one week without his medication, he was released. He had no phone, no shoes, nor had his family been notified.
I found him on the jail steps, looking withdrawn and confused. When I tried to talk to him, he walked away. He walked for more than one mile in the 100 degree plus heat while I tried to convince him to stop. His mother finally arrived but he continued to walk away from her. He walked straight into the Trinity River. He would have drowned if police had not shown up and fished him out of the water.
This sad episode could have been avoided. He should have been taken to the hospital initially. If not, he’d should have been provided his medication while in jail. And last, he should have been released to mental health professionals or his family.
We can do better than this.

ACCOUNTABILITY
As the elected District Attorney of Cooke County, I reduced the crime by 25% (documented with the Office of Court Administration) while cutting the jail population in half. This was accomplished by working hard to move violent inmates to the Texas Department of Corrections and moving old cases, some as old as 12 years leftover from the previous administration.
Just like you and me, judges are not above the law. When elected, they should fulfill the promise they made to us. They need to be present and accountable to deliver verdicts in a timely manner. At the same time, they need to make sure they understand a case thoroughly. They have to be diligent to the law. Yet, for too long, the same people have been running our government and courts. When one party stays in control for decades it leads to extremism and corruption. It’s time for a change.

As the DNA attorney in Dallas, I helped exonerate several people who were wrongfully convicted. I’ve written over 300 appellate briefs, I am experienced in critical thinking. I quickly identify and solve complex legal issues. I will work hard to clear cases in a speedy and fair manner.
I will strive for true justice for all.

It doesn’t matter whether we’ve lived in Tarrant County all our lives or have moved here recently, the amount of money we have in our wallet now shouldn’t block our freedom to prosper in the future.

Everyone in our community, whatever social status, race or gender, deserves to be safe. Justice done in a timely manner ensures violent offenders are in jail, and those accused of lesser crimes don’t languish in jail.
Certain members of our system prioritize power and profit over protection. They are lining their pockets instead of serving all the people in our county. We need people and a system dedicated to timely justice. We need to make sure judges mete out punishments respectful of all defendants, yet appropriate to the crime. |
