Statement from Cindy:
As a professor of government, I became alarmed at the erosion of our democracy years ago. I quit my job I loved and knocked on over 3000 doors in Tarrant County (population 2.2 million, most populous red county in the United States, larger than 14 states) doing everything I could to educate voters of the importance of their involvement. I attended every event possible and gave countless speeches of what we were up against.
When I was a police officer I thought there has to be a better way, when I saw mentally ill people being criminalized for doing those things that mentally ill people do: criminal trespass (business owners don't want them around), wrongful transports to jail instead of the hospital as their family members requested, etc. I continued to wish for better outcomes as a career prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, elected district attorney, and finally when I was the DNA attorney for the Dallas District Attorney's office's internationally famous Conviction Integrity Unit, I discovered evidence based, best practices that convicted the worst criminals and freed the innocent and wrongfully accused. I carried that science based protocol with me when I became the Chief of the Mental Health Division which became the best in the nation according to an 18 month study done by Texas A & M University.
Tarrant County does not have a Mental Health Court even though studies show that these therapeutic courts save eight dollars for every one dollar spent. This one of many reasons why our jail deaths have resulted in the largest lawsuits in Tarrant County history. I would like to create such a court.
